Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
