The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" level.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Multiple areas of the capital registered an air quality index over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold recommended by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, representing 15-20x above healthy standards.
Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as winter begins.
Nevertheless recently, the recently formed regional government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judges approved the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city recorded pollution peaking around the night hours to some of the worst readings seen during celebrations in at least three years.
International Effects
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the festivities.
Long-Standing Pollution Problem
Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in the city have persisted as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.
Around Diwali, the concentration of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.
Various Contamination Sources
The situation in the capital is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution results in elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing 10,000 untimely fatalities each year in the city.
